How to book a photographer.

So  how to book a photographer for your Asian Wedding? As a photographer, this is unbiased and objective advice from a me? I have tried to relate the answers to the questions I get asked, and also how I manage my client’s expectations.

There are literately 1000s upon 1000s of potential people who want to take your photograph. Just type wedding photographer in Google (64 million results) and see for yourself. So how do you cut through the chaff and find the gem that will make you happy?

Book an asian wedding photographer

Which photographer is right for you?

As a guestamate based on membership of some photographic organisations, there are around 8,000 potential photographers for you to hire.  One thing to bear in mind is that the wedding photography sector is one that has been faced with a lot of challenges, the biggest one being that there has been a surge of hobbyist photographers who shoot weddings.  Some are good, and some to dire to even think about it.

Identifying a good photographer is difficult, so where does one start, 70% of my clients come from recommendations. So start there, talk to work colleagues, friends see what kind of experience they had with their wedding photographer.

If none of your friends have got married recently do a web search, but be wise in your search terms, typing wedding photographers in Google will throw up over 62 million items. Be more precise “Asian wedding photographer London” or even name your venue, this way the potential photographic suitor will have worked there too “Asian wedding photographer Hedsor House”.

Have a good look at the photos, search around the galleries, have a look at their blog. Here’s the cool part, all photographers, myself included will dazzle you with the pick of the crop, the bride and groom shots. But does the photo gallery have more from the day? Are there group shots, reportage, and candid.

When you have shortlisted your photographers, go and see them, and make sure you have a look at a complete wedding, and not just the best shots, the pictures you want to see. If he /she can’t show you a full wedding WALK AWAY.   This goes for Wedding videographers too, its all to easy to see a highlight video but what will the other 40 Mins be like.

Key Questions to ask your Asian Wedding Photographer:

  • Do you have any formal training as a photographer?
  • Do you have any qualifications as a photographer?
  • Are you a qualified member of a professional organisation?
  • (This is a tricky one as there are a lot of organisations out there, and some you organisations all you need to-do to be a member is pay a fee. If they are a qualified member then this has merit, being a member of a particular organisation does not make them a professional photographer.)
  • Are you full-time photographer? (this will affect how much you pay them)
  • Can you show me a full wedding album?
  • Do you have Public Liability and professional indemnity insurance?
  • Do you spend time on Continuing Professional Development?
  • How many weddings have you covered?
  • What is your style of photography (this will affect your ultimate choice  if their style is not what you’re looking for, this will create issues)

The rule of thumb is if they can answer yes to the first 7 questions then they should be in the top of your shortlist, the other factors then become subjective choices.

How much does it cost for a Wedding Photographer?

That totally depends on your viewpoint of the value you place on your wedding memories.  It’s hard to say what an average price should be, as a business I know what my costs are to run the business, and that is taken into account when we price each wedding. But consider what else you are spending on then make an informed judgement. For example, if you’re spending £300 on a wedding car to take you to the venue from home, a journey which is 45 mins, then can you justify paying a professional full-time photographer to cover your entire wedding day for £300 and then provide you with an album?

Ultimately the final choice of photographer is dependant on a lot of factors, ask the right question, look at the right work and see if you get on with them personally, if you don’t then don’t book him or her even if they are cheap.

Asian Weddings are boring…so this couple changed the script

For some, an Asian Weddings is a slow-paced affair, everything at a gentle pace. While most of the couples, that book me, plan a wedding not as sedate. But we’re not talking over the top elements, fancy chair covers, or fast cars, they rely on their guests, families and friends to add the atmosphere and vibe of the wedding day.

From the energetic dancing and dhol to mark the arrival of the barrat, to the equally abundant voices at the gate, barring the groom from entering the venue, unless they hand over some solid cash. The reverence of the khutba by the Imam, and the elegant bridal entrance. All these moments, that define the day, and create the story of Asian Weddings.

The story then becomes abundant of pictures, and I look for the unconventional moments that prompt the day, that you may miss, but will love to relive once you see them.

Heres a little story I loved to photograph and retell in the heart of the Cheshire countryside.

Woburn Abbey Asian Wedding Photographer.  In a snow blizzard,  the team and I were on the way to the Woburn Asian Wedding fair.  For those who braved the snow they got a sneak peak new Luxury Wedding Books. As well meeting some great suppliers from across the South East, to help plan their weddings.

Woburn Sculpture Gallery, is main attraction for Asian weddings. The long room with high windows allows in plenty of natural light which is a photographers dream.  The room is dotted with pristine columns, and in between plenty of marble statues.

The Sculpture gallery has a cool secret, the orangery.  A tropical oasis in the heart of Bedfordshire, which is an amazing spot for some memorable photos. After the awesome fashion show featuring Kian-E Haute Couture  ,  and as the Woburn Abbey Asian Wedding Photographer, I was asked to capture some stunning photographs of all the models an array of Asian wedding saris and lenghas.

The range of suppliers and vendors was nothing short of brilliant. And the  Venue hosts and Wedding planners are the most helpful you can find.

The Engagement shoot in the heart of the city. As the 9-5 workday ended, I met up with Leena & Hamir, in the heart of the city to capture a few pictures for their wedding entrance slide show.  They wanted to tell their story; from when they were young, to how they met. That’s where I come in.  A pre-wedding/ engagement  shoot like this takes more often than not a couple of hours. This particular day, was the beginning of spring and a  little longer than normal, so we decided to take in the sights along The Thames and capture some of the London skylines.

First stop was the icon that is St Pauls Cathedral, the beacon of hope during testing times. The Cathedral looked amazing draped in the golden light of a late London Afternoon.  We ventured closer and manged to find a tourist free spot on the steps, and clicked a few more.  The biggest challenge for during the course of the session is that both mentioned that they did not like being in front of the camera, so my job was to ease them in and make them relaxed and enjoy the time taking pictures. I think i manged that.

The Asian Wedding Photography Consultation Tours

Each month, I hit the road for a few days, to meet couples and brides to be with Asian Wedding Photography Consultation Tour. For the most part, I get  to help clients with their wedding photography planning. And, of course to showcase the shiny new products we have.

There are two types of events that I attend. First, its the big glitzy shows like the www.asianweddingexperience.com Wedding Showcase, Asiana Wedding Show, The National Asian Wedding Show and the AWD live events. I go to these events to meet couples across the country who have heard of my work but can’t get to me, so I go to them.

The second type of events are run by myself and are a little more intimate and by pre-appointment only. These I enjoy a lot, I cant find out more about the couples, what they are expecting from me and what I can expect from them. These last for around 30 mins and are very handy for the wedding day.

The wedding photography tour dates for 2018 include:

  • 23 February 2020 – The AWE Showcase, Manchester Hilton Deansgate – Book your tickets here
  • February 2020 – Venue Central Wedding Show Luton
  • October 2019 – Asian Wedding Live
  • 3 march 2018 – Shendish Manor
  • March 2018 – Woburn Sculpture Park
  • 18 April – Invite only showcase – London & Birmingham
  • 18 May – Invite only Showcase – Manchester & London

Asian Wedding social media influencers & Wedding PhotographersAsian Wedding social media influencers.  Lest face it, the way people plan weddings have changed.  And in the last 10 years considerably thanks to social media and the rise of the Pinterest and  Instagram.  In the good old days, couples would eagerly await the publication of  bridal magazines such as Vouge Bride, Asiana Magazine, Bride Magazine. Flip through and rip out pages and stick them in a scrap wedding book.  Wedding  magazine editors  were good, and curated themes, colours and ideas to inspire you.  While  couples hung on there every word and idea they were still a distant apart.   Fast forward to 2020 and what do we have.  A new type of person to help you curate and inspire you, but this time they are more accessible and closer. Welcome to peer to peer inspiration and the world of the influencer.

So what is an influencer ?

So what is an influencer ? Essentially its a type of celebrity endorsement, but not just for celebrities anymore, but anyone who is passionate about their world, topic or just about anything really and tell the niche audience about it.  Sometimes is sponsored content other times is just the pure love of the product or experience.

We are yet to see a major impact on the Asian Wedding social media influencers,  but it is slowly taking shape.  In the early days it was the likes of magazines who had blogs and websites,  such as asiana.tv,  asianweddingideas.co.uk  and Kush Magaizne.  But now as some wedding suppliers are achieving almost celebrity status in the Wedding Sector who should you go to for ideas, inspiration and expert advice.

Engaging Influencers.

A list of the ones i most follow and enjoy engaging with

@1swevents A truly established wedding decor company in London and an expert on Asian Wedding Decor
@afshanazad   – An old friend of ours and someone whose witty comments and views on the bigger world keeps us amused.
.@aweshowcase  – One of the UKs longest running Asian Wedding exhibitions and shows
@asianatv – the UKs oldest and trusted wedding magazines that has transitioned from print to digital
@InspiringAsianBrides – Helping brides design their ultimate wedding
and erm ahem @iamphotoguy (yes i know – but i enjoy sharing ideas, thoughts and inspiration with you all)

Sharing ideas

The rallying call of an influencer  can mean the difference between a really cool wedding theme or the one your grandma wants you to have.  Sharing ideas, thoughts and inspirations is the way the world and influncers in the world of social media are the new word of mouth.  The power of  the digital way of life is wide reaching As this example of how an small idea reached a wide audience shows.

Social Media and especially  photography experts are are turning their passion for sharing into a new artform.   It takes a lot of practice, patience and hardowrk to be a core influencer.  While anyone can do it, the advice from hardened professional influencers is be a expert in your field and love what you do, as this photographer found out on her journey to being  influencer.

Asian Weddings are crazy in the best possible way, however, Jewish Weddings are up there with the best of them. The day was long one, but started late in the afternoon.  As usual the bride wanted to capture the moments of her family and brides maids getting ready in the suite. The atmosphere was one of joy and abundant love. The bride to be was cool as a cucumber.  She had been getting ready since 10am, by the time I started photographing the details she was still in her rollers.

Her mum was fussing over her, and dad was tending to the little details with the wedding planner. Suddenly dad walks through the door at the price time that his daughter opens the door to her room, in her wedding dress.  A gulp is heard, throat clearing and tear twinned with a smile appears on her fathers face.

The main ceremony was to be held at the Central Synagogue in London, a prominent venue for Jewish Weddings. She jumped into a classic Rolls Royce, and makes her way there. What followed was a ceremony like no other,  tears, joy and happiness.

With the ceremony done, the main event was the reception at Claridge’s. The history of the venue lent it self well to the modern take on a traditional Simicha – live bands, dancing, and the traditional breaking of the bread.  The wedding portraits were and absolute pleasure to shoot, and we discovered some great spaces to photograph in.
